"Happy birthday to the Port of Yokohama" Project will start from April,28th,2009.
Yokohama is one of the first places open to foreigners in Japan. It is a gateway for Western culture and technology.
150 years ago, Japan's remarkable modernization and economic development started at Yokohama.
Until the end of the feudal Edo period, Japan had a policy of national seclusion, having no contact with foreign country. In 1853?54, American commander Matthew Perry arrived at Yokohama with a fleet of American warships in order to demand that Japan open several ports for commerce, and the Port of Yokohama was opened on 2 June 1859 to the world. Yokohama quickly became the base of foreign trade in Japan and still support economic growth of Japan.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the port, as well as to make it a good opportunity to know the achievenments of the forerunnners and the history, and to create a city full of chances, we will organize a commemorative ceremony and events with citizens and companies.
